Tree trimming and removal in Kiefer

Crown & Root Tree Service is locally owned in Tulsa, and Kiefer is part of our regular service area, with no extra travel charge.

Kiefer is growing. The town went from about 1,700 people in 2010 to almost 2,200 in 2020, and most of the new homes are on what used to be open ground at the edge of town. It’s 3 miles west of Glenpool on Highway 67, then straight up 75 to Tulsa.

The old part of town goes back to the Glenn Pool oil boom. It was called Praper until December 1906, when it took the name Kiefer and started shipping crude. Yards that old have trees that old: big shade trees that have been through a lot of ice storms, with dead wood up top and long limbs over roofs and lines.

Those trees usually don’t need to come down. Taking out the dead wood and shortening the heaviest limbs keeps them standing and keeps the limbs off the house.

Questions from Kiefer homeowners

How much does tree removal cost in Kiefer?

Kiefer’s old town has big shade trees from the oil-boom days, often standing over roofs and lines with dead wood up top from past ice storms. Those come down in pieces and take the most time. Trees at the newer homes on the edge of town are usually smaller and quicker. Stump grinding, cleanup and haul-away are included, and the estimate is free with a firm price.

Will the Town of Kiefer remove a fallen tree?

Not if it’s on your property. The town clears trees blocking its streets; a tree in your yard is yours. One lying across the line to your house is a job for the power company first: stay back and call them. Once the line is clear, we cut the tree up and haul it off the same day.

What time of year is best to trim trees in Kiefer?

Late winter for most of Kiefer’s old shade trees: with the leaves off, the ice-storm damage and dead wood up top are easy to see, and the cuts seal once spring growth starts. Oaks are best done in the dead of winter. The December 2007 ice storm, called possibly the costliest in Oklahoma history, is a good reminder to take weight off long limbs before winter rather than after.

Should I trim my tree or have it removed in Kiefer?

For Kiefer’s old shade trees, trimming usually wins: taking out the dead wood and shortening the heaviest limbs keeps the tree standing and off the roof for years. Removal is cheaper only when the trunk is hollow, the tree is mostly dead, or it has grown into the lines in a way trimming can’t fix.

How can I tell if a tree is dead?

Scratch a small twig with your thumbnail: green and moist underneath means it’s alive, brown and dry means that branch is dead. Other signs are bark falling off, mushrooms at the base, and no leaves in spring when the trees around it have them. If a big old tree in Kiefer fails more than one of those, have it looked at before it drops a limb.
