Why the right tree matters

A tree you plant today is one your yard lives with for decades, which is why Crown & Root Tree Service picks the tree and the spot together. The wrong species in the wrong spot can mean a canopy that outgrows the space, roots that lift a driveway, or a tree that never quite thrives in soil it was not suited for. The right tree, placed well, grows into an asset instead of a future problem.

Planting depth and hole prep matter more than most people expect. A tree planted too deep, or into soil that was not loosened and prepped correctly, can struggle for years without ever showing an obvious cause.

What's typically included

  • A site visit to talk through species, sun, soil and spacing
  • Correct planting depth and hole preparation
  • Staking when the tree or the site needs it
  • A thorough watering-in at planting
  • A written watering and care schedule for your specific tree
  • An optional supply and care plan, if you would rather we handle the ongoing upkeep too

We plant every tree the way we'd want one planted in our own yard, built to last, not just to look good today.

How we handle placement and your yard

Before we dig, we get utility lines located and talk through placement relative to your house, fence, driveway and any existing landscaping, so the tree has room to grow into for the next twenty years, not just the next two.

We protect the surrounding lawn and beds while we work, and cleanup is part of every job, not an extra. Excess soil and sod get cleared before we leave, and you walk away with a written care schedule, not a guess.

Aftercare: the first year is what counts

  • Water deeply and regularly through the first growing season, more than an established tree needs
  • Keep mulch in a ring around the base, but pulled back from touching the trunk
  • Remove staking once the tree can stand on its own, usually after the first year
  • Watch for wilting or leaf drop in the first few weeks, a sign the tree needs more consistent water while it establishes
  • Skip the fertilizer the first year, as general guidance a new tree does better putting its energy into roots than top growth

Our promise

Safety first

We locate utility lines before we dig, every time, so a new tree doesn't turn into a cut line.

Prepared from the first visit

We pick the spot based on what that tree looks like in twenty years, not just where it looks good on planting day.

No surprises

You'll know the species, the spot and the price before we break ground, and you'll walk away with a written care schedule, not a guess.

Clean finish

Hole backfilled, mulch ring set, excess soil cleared. The yard looks planted, not dug up.

Planting FAQ

How much does it cost to plant a tree?

It depends on the tree, the size, and the site, so call us and we will walk you through it. When you call, we will also tell you about our optional supply and care plan, if you would rather we source the tree and look after it for you instead of handling that yourself.

When is the best time to plant trees in Tulsa?

Fall through early spring, while trees are dormant and the weather is cooler, is generally the easier window. It gives roots time to establish before the heat and humidity of an Oklahoma summer puts stress on a newly planted tree.

How do you choose which tree fits my yard?

We look at the space the tree will actually have at full size, not just today, how close it is to the house, lines and driveway, how much sun the spot gets, and what the soil is like. A tree planted in the wrong spot usually causes problems a decade down the road, so we would rather walk through that with you up front.

How far should a new tree be planted from my house, fence or driveway?

It depends on the species and how large it gets at maturity, a shade tree needs more clearance than an ornamental. As a general rule, we plan for the tree’s full-grown canopy and root spread, not its size on planting day.

How often does a new tree need water in its first year?

As general guidance, most newly planted trees do well with a slow, deep watering two to three times a week for the first month, then tapering to once or twice a week through the rest of the first growing season, adjusted for rain and heat. A newly planted tree has a small root system and dries out faster than it looks like it should. We give every customer a written watering and care schedule specific to their tree, so you are not guessing.

Do you guarantee the tree will survive?

No, we do not promise a survival guarantee, too much of it depends on weather, watering and things outside our control once we leave. What we do instead is set you up to succeed: a written care schedule with every planting, and an optional supply and care plan if you want us handling the ongoing watering and upkeep too.

Can you plant around existing underground utility lines safely?

Yes, we have utility lines located before digging in a new planting spot so we are not cutting into anything buried. That is standard practice any time we are putting a hole in the ground, not an extra step we skip to save time.

Should I start with a small sapling or a larger nursery tree?

A smaller tree often establishes and catches up faster than people expect, since it has less root system to rebuild after transplanting. A larger tree gives you an instant look but needs more careful watering and staking while it recovers. We can talk through the tradeoff for your spot and your patience level.
