Who trims what
Most of the Tulsa area gets its power from PSO, and PSO splits the work like this. Crown & Root Tree Service handles both sides.
Lines along the street
The lines that run pole to pole. PSO trims near them for free on its own schedule, with crews back at least every four years. Want it done sooner or more often? We can do it, and we work the plan out with PSO first, as PSO requires.
The line to your house
The service drop, from the pole to your house. PSO does not trim trees near it, so it falls to the property owner. That is the part we handle for homeowners: limbs rubbing it, growing through it or hanging over it.
A limb touching your power line?
Call (918) 362-9136Why it takes a qualified crew
A limb touching a live line can carry current down to a ladder, a pole saw or whoever is holding it. That is why OSHA limits work within 10 feet of an energized line to qualified line-clearance tree trimmers, and why PSO tells homeowners not to try it themselves.
Our crew includes people qualified for exactly this work. They climb roped in, cut the limbs back in small pieces and lower them away from the line, so nothing drops onto it, your roof or your fence.
Planning around the power
Some jobs can be done with the power on. Others need PSO to temporarily disconnect the line to your house, and PSO asks for at least two business days of notice. We tell you which one your job is at the free estimate, so the work date is planned around it.

Power line FAQ
How much does it cost to trim trees around power lines?
It depends on the size of the tree, how far the limbs have grown into the line, and whether the power has to be disconnected. The estimate is free, and you get a firm price before any work starts.
Who is responsible for trimming trees near power lines in Tulsa?
Only near the lines that run from pole to pole. PSO trims those at no cost on its own schedule, with crews coming back at least every four years. PSO does not trim trees that threaten your service drop, the line that runs from the pole to your house.
Who is responsible for the line that runs to my house?
Under PSO’s policy, the property owner. That is the work we do: limbs rubbing on it, growing through it or hanging over it, trimmed back by our qualified crew so the line is clear.
Can I trim a tree that is touching a power line?
Please don’t. PSO warns homeowners not to try it, and OSHA limits work within 10 feet of a live line to qualified line-clearance tree trimmers. A limb touching a line can carry current to a ladder, a pole saw or the person holding it.
How far should trees be from power lines?
OSHA keeps anyone who isn't trained for line work at least 10 feet from an overhead line, tools and ladders included, so any limb inside that distance is a job for a qualified crew. Our crew includes people qualified for tree trimming near energized power lines. When you plant, keep tall trees well away from the lines and put only small trees and shrubs underneath. Your electric company can tell you the clearance it keeps on its own lines.
Does the power need to be shut off?
Sometimes. PSO can temporarily disconnect the line to your house, and it asks for a call at least two business days ahead. At the free estimate we tell you whether your job needs it, so the work date can be planned around it.
Are you insured for work near power lines?
Yes. We are fully insured, and our coverage includes work near power lines.
A storm put a limb on my power line. What should I do?
If a line is down, sparking or has a tree lying on it, stay well away, keep kids and pets back, and call PSO or 911 first. Once the utility has made it safe, or if a limb is hung up on a line that is still standing, call us. Our emergency team is usually on site within 1 to 2 hours.
What if PSO is not my electric company?
Some towns and rural co-ops have their own rules for trees near their lines. Tell us who your electric company is when you call, and we will check what they require before we start.
